Glossary of Storage Materials for Historic Artifacts
ADHESIVES/TAPES 
3M Hot Melt Glue Sticks, comprised of ethylene vinyl acetate polymer (65%) and hydrocarbon resin (30%), polyethylene, paraffin wax, antioxidant and vinyl acetate.  Available from Conservation Support Systems.

6300 Maxistick Hot Melt Glue Stick, ethylene-vinyl acetate for use in the Hysol Maximatic 2710 Glue Gun available from Industrial Sales Associates, Inc. 39 Henry Drive Tewksbury, MA (508) 851-9494.

FABRICS
CEREX is a spunbonded type 6,6 nylon fabric, available from Conservation Materials, Ltd.

GOR-TEX is a membrane of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) laminated to 100% nonwoven polyester fabric,  manufactured by W.L. Gore & Associates, Elkton, MD.  Available from University products.  felt = thick, fabric = thin.

Hollytex #3529 is a non-woven polyester fabric. Ahlstron Filtration Inc., distributed by Talas, New York, NY.

Reemay is a spunbound, polyester fabric manufactured by DuPont and supplied by Conservation Materials, Sparks, NV.

Stabiltex No. 4.  is a sheer, plain weave 100% polyester multifilament fabric, heat set and unfinished.  Manufactured by Swiss Silk Bolting Cloth Mfg. Co. Ltd. Zurich, available from Talas, New York. N.B. other types of Stabilitex have a gauze weave and heat set finish.

Tetex--(stabiltex) is a multifilament, 100% polyester fabric, manufactured by Swiss Silk Bolting Cloth Mfg. Co. Ltd., Zurich

Tyvek is a non-woven, spunbonded olefin sheet made from high-density polyethylene fibers, manufactured by DuPont, and available in a variety of thicknesses and surface patterns.

SEWING
DMC cotton thread, Dollfus-Mieg & Cie Corporation, South Kearny, NJ.

Heavy Cotton Thread.  Gutterman 100% cotton Quilting Thread, Gutterman Inc. Charlotte, N.C. 

Extra-Fine Dental Floss (nylon), manufactured by Johnson & Johnson Inc., New Brunswick, N.J.

TAPES
3M DOUBLE SIDED TAPE ( #415)

TEFLON tape is a tetrafluoroethylene fluorocarbon polymer, made by DuPont.  It is available as plumber's tape at the hardware store.

J-LAR is a clear pressure sensitive tape with a polypropylene carrier and a methacrylate adhesive, made by Permacel, New Brunswick, NJ.

FOAM/PADDING MATERIALS
Backer Rod (polyethylene foam) is round, flexible continuous lengths of extruded closed cell polyethylene foam with a non-absorbing outer skin and a highly resilient interior network of open and closed cells, which does not out-gas when ruptured."  It is manufactured by Nomaco Inc., Zebulon, http://www.bayindustries.com/backer-rod

Ethafoam (polyethylene foam) is a “strong, resilient, medium-density (2.3 pcf), closed-cell foam. It is ideally suited as a component material in products requiring a shock absorbing, vibration dampening, insulating, buoyancy component, and as a material for cushioning components in packaging applications for impacts or loadings up to 2.5 psi”, obtained from Rempac Foam Corp. or AIN plastic, made by Dow Chemical Company.  Plank form is #220, Sheet is #221.

FOME-COR Laminated panel composed of at least one lamina of expanded polystyrene and at least one other lamina, such as, paper, metal foil or plastic film

Nalgene smooth-surfaced, fine, closed cell polyethylene foam, available from Fisher Scientific.

Plastazote smooth-surfaced, fine, closed cell polyethylene foam

Volara smooth-surfaced, fine, closed cell polyethylene foam

MISCELLANEOUS Blueboard is a light blue-gray colored, acid-free, lignin-free, corrugated multi-use board buffered against acid migration. A water resistant, modified starch adhesive of neutral pH is used for corrugating. The panels are fabricated in single wall, double wall, and cross laminated double wall construction and is available by Archivart®, a division of Heller and Usdan, Inc. 

Mylar is cast polyester film manufactured by Dupont.

Victory Wax is an acid free inert microcrystalline wax distributed by Talas, 213 West 35th Street, New York, NY 10001-1996.
